Course Exemptions (for 'A' level & Polytechnic applicants)
‘A’ level and Polytechnic graduates are granted exemption for a relevant Business core course based on their pre-university qualifications. Exempted courses do not count towards Grade Point Average (GPA) and have no bearing on the classification of honours to be awarded.
| Students who opt for the exemption: |
| 1) |
Are deemed to have fulfilled the requirements of the course and the 4 Academic Units (AUs) will be awarded |
| 2) |
Need not attend the lectures/tutorials/seminars and examinations for the exempted course |
| 3) |
Will not be given a grade for the exempted course |
‘A’ Level Graduates
‘A’ level graduates who have obtained a B grade and above for Economics at A Levels/H2 Level will be eligible for exemption from the first-year core course, AB106: Principles of Economics.
However, for students (in the Bachelor of Business and Double Degree programmes) who would like to consider Actuarial Science as your business major starting Year 2, please do not opt to be exempted from AB106 even though you may be eligible for it. This will enable you to qualify for an exemption from CT7: Economics, part of the professional paper examinations conducted by the Actuarial professional bodies after your graduation from NBS (e.g. Institute of Actuaries, UK and Institute of Actuaries, Australia).
Polytechnic Graduates
Polytechnic graduates are granted an exemption for the relevant first-year course related to the Diploma they have obtained. Note that only Diplomas listed in Annex A are allowed exemptions from the corresponding first-year course.
In addition, for students (in the Bachelor of Business and Double Degree programmes) who would like to consider Actuarial Science as your business major in Year 2, please do not opt to be exempted from AB102: Financial Management OR AA101: Accounting I even if you qualify for it. This will allow you to qualify for the exemption from CT2: Finance and Financial Reporting, part of the professional paper examinations conducted by the Actuarial professional bodies upon your graduation (e.g. Institute of Actuaries, UK and Institute of Actuaries, Australia).
Application Procedure
Students who qualify for exemptions will be informed by the NBS Undergraduate Programmes via email before the start of semester. If you wish to accept the offer for the exemption, you must complete the form at:
A Level Graduates
Polytechnic Graduates
Those of you who still wish to take up the exempted course in the first-year (if you feel that taking the course at the undergraduate level will serve as a good refresher and appreciation of the higher-level courses), can still opt to do so. No action is needed on your part for rejection of the exemption offer.
