Research:
My current research interests mainly deal with issues relating to the international financial markets. They include issues concerning geographic proximity and home bias, international stock exchange listing and international mutual funds. Most of my research work is empirical in nature and I mainly deal with equity data from stock exchanges all over the world (see, for example, a co-authored paper (with Lilian Ng and Vicentiu Covrig) in the Journal of International Business Studies (2006)). I have also written about ten papers based on data from Singapore stock exchange. They include the introduction of call auction in Singapore (Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, 2007), discontinuation of trading of Malaysian shares in Singapore (Financial Review (2002) and Journal of Financial Research (2003)), price discovery (Journal of Multinational Financial Management, 1999), foreign ownership restrictions (Economics Letters, 1997), and tick size reduction in Singapore (Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, 1995). I have also written two papers using Chinese stock market data (Pacific-Basin Finance Journal (2006) and Journal of Multinational Financial Management (2004)). My best paper so far is a co-authored paper (with Kalok Chan and Allaudeen Hameed) in the prestigious Journal of Finance (2003). In this paper, we examine the price behavior and market activity of a group of Hong Kong companies which were delisted from the Hong Kong stock exchange to be listed on the Singapore stock exchange. Our results support the conjecture that stock price fluctuations are affected by country-specific investor sentiment. I hope to write more papers of this quality. A spinoff of this paper is published in the Journal of Banking and Finance (2003) and coauthored with Thomas McInish. Tom and I have coauthored more than 10 papers and a number of them are market microstructure papers. Many of my research papers have to do with international stock exchange listing – the listing of stocks on the home market as well as overseas market(s). Two very decent papers from my earlier work are based on this topic (Journal of International Money and Finance (1994) and Journal of Banking and Finance (1994)).
