Kaoru Kamata

Professor Kaoru Kamata was appointed President of Waseda University on November 5, 2010. A stalwart and alumnus of the university, he has held several leadership roles at Waseda’s Faculty of Law since joining as a faculty member in 1978. He was Dean of the Waseda Law School from 2005 to 2010, and Associate Dean of the School of Law from 1990 to 1994.

Professor Kamata specialises in civil law, real estate law and French law, and is actively engaged in professional and public service. He is the Chairman of the Land Appraisal Committee of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and a member of the Industrial Structure Council of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. He is also a member of the Medical Ethics Council of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and a Special Counsel at Mori Hamada & Matsumoto.

Professor Kamata obtained a B.A. in Law degree Waseda’s School of Law in 1970, which was followed by an M.A. in Law from the university’s Graduate School of Law in 1972. In 1975, he completed all requirements for a doctoral degree, except for the doctoral dissertation. From 1978 to 1980, he was a visiting researcher at France’s University Panthéon-Assas, and from 2001 to 2003, he was an exchange researcher at the L’académie de Paris, France.​
