Information Technology & Operations Management

The Division of Information Technology and Operations Management comprises faculty with expertise in two key business disciplines: Information Technology (IT) and Operations Management (OM).

Research

Faculty in information systems conduct research on the ways in which information technology is transforming organisations and communities. Key areas studied include social media, mobile platforms, healthcare IT, knowledge and innovation management, business digitisation, and the IT profession. The research contributes to theories, frameworks and methodologies from Computer Science, Economics, Organisational Behaviour, Psychology, Sociology and Strategy. The research has been published in the top journals in the field, including Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Organization Science, Academy of Management Journal, and Management Science among others. As importantly, the research contributes to practice through ongoing interactions with industry partners.

Faculty in operations management conduct research on ways in which the operations of an organization can be improved both in terms of bottom line and top line as well as in terms of corporate sustainability and responsibility. Key research areas addressed include supply chain management, sustainable operations, humanitarian operations, inventory management, health care operations, resource scheduling, operations flexibility, and pricing and revenue Management. The research has been published in the top journals in the field, including Management Science, Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Production & Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, and Strategic Management Journal.

Academic Programs

The division is responsible for core courses in information systems and operations in the undergraduate programme. The division also offers the Business Analytics specialisation to undergraduate students. The specialisation is distinguished by a strong and balanced focus on business issues, data management and data modelling. Adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, the program develops students with well-balanced training in both quantitative analytical skills as well as qualitative business acumen. Students are also given opportunities to apply their analytics knowledge in real-life projects as well as being exposed to business cases with our case-approach teaching pedagogy.

The division offers core and elective courses in information technology operations and analytics in the MBA program. It is also a key partner in premier cross-disciplinary programs with the College of Engineering, and the College of Science. The programs include the double degree in Business and Computer Engineering/Computer Science, the MSc in Technology Management for the Renaissance Engineering Programme, and the MSc in Financial Engineering.

At the PhD level, the division offers the PhD in Operations Management and the PhD in Information Systems. Our students are well positioned for academic careers through a rigourous, structured program and mentorship from the strong group of research faculty.
