Essential Mathematics (EM1)

Rationale

Mathematics knowledge and skills are important and essential in Nanyang Business School’s curriculum.

This bridging course is developed with the aim of helping incoming students strengthen their foundation in Mathematics. The course will better prepare them for foundational and advanced level courses within NBS, many of which are highly quantitative and analytical in nature.

The course is designed to enable students to excel quantitatively; and is particularly useful in preparing students to handle the first year statistics course.

 

Criteria 

  1. Polytechnic diploma holders without ‘O’ level Additional Mathematics; or
  2. Polytechnic diploma holders with ‘O’ level Additional Mathematics grade of B4 and below

A-level / IB diploma holders who wish to revise or strengthen their understanding of Mathematics required for their studies at NBS are also welcome to attend.  


Class enrolment

Students, including returning NSmen, who are required to attend the course will be notified that they need to do so and will be pre-registered for the course.

Students can apply for an exemption if they have attended any pre-University module(s) or modules at their respective polytechnics which cover the contents of this bridging course.

Applications for exemption can be submitted here, with a copy of the course outline and your transcript (​only PDF copies are accepted).​

Students who are not required to attend the course but who wish to do so can register here. Registration is subject to availability of vacancies and will be on a first-come-first-served basis. The registration period will commence from early July.

 

Class Schedule

The finalized course schedule for 2017 is as follows:

Class 1: Monday 17 July 2017 to Thursday 20 July 2017
1400 – 1800 hours​
Class 2: Monday 24 July 2017 to Thursday 27 July 2017
1400 – 1800 hours


Students who are required to attend the course will be informed nearer to date of their grouping.

A:Yes, this is to be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please submit your exemption request here​, with a copy of the course outline and your transcript (​only PDF copies are accepted). 

Q: What should I do if I am unable to attend the bridging course due to other commitments?
A :This is an essential and important bridging course.Students who are required to take the bridging course should free up their schedule for the four-day bridging course to tap on the benefits of this preparatory course. In addition, the course is offered free of charge to students with a programme offer from NBS. The course fee has been waived for all students.

Q : Am I required to pass the bridging course?

A: Yes, students are expected to pass the course.

Q : Are there any academic units awarded for the bridging course?
A: The bridging course is non-credit based, thus there will not be any academic units awarded.
