1. How & when was the Programme established?
The Programme was launched on 29 July 1998 by former Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Singapore, Dr Tony Tan. It is funded by a S$25 million endowment from the Singapore Totalisator Board and the Singapore Government.

2. What is the goal of setting up this Programme?

  • To position Singapore as the hub of world-class business and management education - "the Boston of the East".
  • To help develop Asia's future business and government leaders.
  • To develop an important network of individuals in senior levels throughout Asia and elsewhere.

3. What kind of candidates are you looking for?
High potential individuals in mid-career, both from the private sector and public sector, primarily from the Asian region. The average age of our candidates is about 35 years. They include bankers, lawyers, engineers, diplomats, military officers, new economy entrepreneurs, senior civil servants and even medical doctors.

4. Where do your candidates come from?
About 60% from overseas countries and 40% from Singapore. So far, about 60% are from the business sector and 40% from the government sector.

Including the new Class of 2008/2009, we have Fellows from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malawi,  Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Myanmar, Namibia, Pakistan,  Papua New Guinea, Peru,  Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri-Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam.

5. What do Nanyang Fellows do when they complete the course?
Most of them return to their home countries and organizations, usually to more senior roles. We have many successful and influential alumni from the region. Please visit our alumni page for details.

7. What are the admission requirements?

  • A good bachelor's degree
  • At least 8 years of management or senior professional experience
  • Demonstrated fluency in English & a good score in the TOEFL (For international applicants)
  • Recommendation from organisation' s CEO or equivalent

8. What is the duration of this Programme?
The Programme is only available on a full-time basis. The duration of the Programme is 12 months (3 trimesters)

  • 10.5 months at NBS-NTU
  • 3 weeks at MIT Sloan
  • 2 weeks in Wharton
  • 1 to one and half week for BSM

9. How much does it cost to undertake this Programme?
The total fee is S$68,000/- which includes tuition fee at NBS, MIT Sloan and Wharton; and one overseas Business Study Mission. Living and traveling costs are estimated at US$25,000/- (for international applicants).

10. What are the course requirements?

  • 45 AUs.

  • An overseas Business Study Mission (BSM) & a group dissertation.

  • 3 weeks MIT Sloan’s Residential Programme

  • 2 weeks Wharton’s Residential Programme

11. How do you recruit your candidates?
We mainly recruit by direct selling. We approach CEOs & HR Directors of top companies and overseas Ambassadors in Singapore directly. We also recruit direct from leading companies overseas, primarily from the Asian region.

There are 3 ways for candidates to get into our Programme: by scholarship, sponsorship from companies, and self-funding. Besides direct selling, we do advertise in local and overseas newspapers and magazines.

12. Do you offer any scholarships for this Programme?
Yes, attractive scholarships are offered to outstanding international candidates. The scholarship provides each scholar with:

  • Full or partial tuition fee waiver
  • Monthly Stipend, air passage and overseas accommodations.

13. What does the Programme focus on?
This Programme is patterned after the MIT Sloan Fellows Programme.

Our courses provide a broad general management training. We also pay special emphasis to policy issues at the regional and global level. So, while we provide a solid grounding in the standard MBA topics like accounting, finance, marketing, economics, mergers & acquisitions, human capital management and others, we also discuss broader issues like sustainability and leadership (in MIT Sloan & Wharton).

14. What are the highlights of the Programme?
The highlights include:

  • 5 weeks MIT Sloan and Wharton Residential Programme in the US campus.
  • Leadership Seminar Series featuring prominent CEOs and public figures speaking to our Fellows in closed-door sessions. Previous speakers include: S Dhanabalan (Chairman, Temasek Holdings); Koh Boon Hwee (Chairman, DBS Holdings); Philip Yeo (Ex-Chairman, EDB); Dr Tony Tan (Ex-Deputy Prime Minister, Singapore); Choo Chau Beng (CEO, Keppel Offshore & Marine), Colin Low (President, GE Singapore), General Desmond Kuek (Chief of Defence Force, Singapore) and Ron Sim (Founder & CEO, Osim International).
  • Business Study Mission to key business and policy centers. Past classes have gone to Washington DC / New York; London / Brussels; San Francisco / Silicon Valley; Tokyo / Hong Kong; London / Cambridge / Helsinki; Seattle/ San Jose / San Francisco. Athens, Greece; Sydney, Australia; Munich & Frankfurt. The class of 2007/2008 went to Bangalore India.
