On 2nd December 2017, teams of undergraduate and graduate students from top business schools around the world gathered at The University of Chicago for the finals of the 2017 Peeptrade University Challenge. For the Graduate Global Investment Challenge category, our MBA team - Vineet Sharma, Richard Durant, Olga Kotenko and Xiao Dan, did NBS proud by coming in second place.

This is the second time Peeptrade is organising this portfolio management competition for students of top business schools to challenge their investment skills, and to get hands-on experience with the financial markets.

“We created this programme to give students real-world experience in the financial market. Our vision is to extend this learning opportunity to as many universities across the globe as possible,” said Juan Mendoza, co-founder and CEO of Peeptrade.

Being passionate about investing, our MBA team decided to participate in the competition.

"There were occasions where we had different opinions but we know that we have to work as a team. The team spirit we built eventually brought us to the finals," Vineet said.

Each member had different roles but they all exchanged opinions on trading strategies. While Xiao Dan and Olga weaved the presentation materials together, Richard and Vineet’s well-executed presentation brought their ideas to life.

They came up with a high-risk strategy for their investment thesis and won them third place in the first round. Subsequently, the regular communication of ideas, balance of risks and returns and a final solid presentation won them the second place in the final round.

“At the very beginning, our expectations were moderate - we wanted to gain experience and test our abilities. However, closer to the end of the competition, we realised that our deliverables are quite good – we made it!” said Richard, the team leader.

The team is grateful to their mentor Dr Douglas Streeter Rolph and would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his guidance throughout the competition, and further imparting his knowledge on trading and investment.
