New to the undergraduate course lineup, BF2213 has achieved accreditation by The Institute of Banking & Finance (IBF) Singapore, making it the first undergraduate compliance course in Nanyang Business School (NBS) to have done so.

IBF is an industry association that focuses on developing the professional competencies of financial practitioners in Singapore, and works closely with the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to empower them with capabilities for a robust Asian financial outlook.

Serving as an introduction to compliance, BF2213 aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the role of compliance in financial institutions. Students will be introduced to the issues of financial crimes such as anti-money laundering.

Key course topics of interest to students:
Understanding the financial services sector
Role of compliance within financial institutions
Financial regulatory environment
Compliance risks
Anti-money laundering risks
Importance of well-designed and effective control mechanisms

IBF accredits financial sector training programmes and offers three levels of professional certification for financial practitioners based on the IBF Standards. Students who obtain a minimum of a ‘B’ grade in the course will be accredited for IBF’s Level 1 Compliance Standards.

The IBF Standards

They represent an integrated set of competency standards and practice-oriented development roadmaps for financial sector practitioners which aim to equip them with the skillsets required at the different stages of their career.

Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired the following set of skills according to IBF’s Level 1 Compliance Standards:

- Understand trends, developments, and basic features of products in the financial services industry
- Recognise compliance vulnerabilities and understand application of compliance controls
- Execute compliance monitoring activities
- Support analysis of compliance matters

Over the last 40 years, close to 200,000 participants have benefitted from over 4,000 courses offered by IBF, making NBS undergraduates a very privileged bunch of students.

An IBF certification gives students access to:

The IBF Portal – plan your career, get privy to industry talks and the latest training programmes
The IBF Programme directory – 300 programmes are available for every training need, and at every stage of your career
CPD programmes – Up to 1,000 of them which will keep you updated on the latest industry trends and developments
Opportunities – Mentorship and networking with industry captains who happen to be IBF Fellows, making this a very valuable proposition

BF2213 will be taught by two instructors, both of whom are NBS alumni and currently ply their trade in the compliance field. The idea for the course was first propositioned by one of the instructors, due to increasing demands in compliance professionals. The course is currently full subscribed at 50 students.

Pre-requisites: AB1201 Financial Management
No. of AUs: 4

By the end of the course, students will have acquired sufficient understanding and unearthed newfound appreciation for what a compliance officer within a financial institution does – manage risk, maintain a positive reputation, and avoid lawsuits!
