The Executive Certificate for Engineering Leadership Programme is specially designed for engineers and other technical professionals who are interested to acquire essential business knowledge, people management and communication skills to complement their technical expertise. Close to 40 participants took part in the inaugural run of the programme.

One key highlight of the programme was the panel discussion where participants had the opportunity to interact with senior executives of the technology industry. Agus and MK both come from leaders of their respective fields – Agus is Senior Manager, Product Management of Grabpay (Grab Financial Group) and MK is Senior Manager, Business Operations - Customer Experience at Cisco.

In addition to sharing their personal experiences and views on Leadership in the Digital Age, both panelists also took questions from the floor.

When asked how they would help employees understand digitisation and overcome the fear of being replaced by technology, both MK and Agus replied that communication plays an important role.

“Leaders need to be candid and encourage open communication. Leaders also need to walk the talk otherwise the employees would lose confidence and trust in the management,” shared MK.

Concurring with MK, Agus said,” Communication is important as it makes sure that everyone in the organisation knows what lies ahead for them. Also, leaders should focus on the benefits that technology and change would bring.”

In response to another participant’s question on whether one should be a generalist or specialist in the digital age, MK and Agus both agreed that core competencies and skills are necessary but a right attitude and the ability to see things in the wider perspective are equally important.

Concluding the panel discussion, MK and Agus each shared their final piece of advice to the participants.

“Be connected to your people,” said MK.

“Everyone is a leader, you can lead by influence, advice and persuasion,” said Agus.
